(1) I've been recollecting physical music releases lately and I love that this was delivered to my inbox just a few days after I reacquired some Santana albums that I used to have physical. I've listened to them non-stop the last few days. Sitting down and listening to Abraxas again on physical in a single session, it is just astonishing how well these guys were playing and the sound they created. And Carlos was just 24, putting out what has become truly legendary and evergreen tracks. What a freaking era!
(2) His later albums like Caravanserai are imo wildly underrated but I do love a lot of the other spiritual jazz and jazz fusion efforts from that era so it speaks to me.
(3) Primavera is an absolutely phenomenal song, you guys were seriously cooking on that track and it needs to be in more people's rotation.
So cool to here more about your time with him, it sounds positively electrifying.
Something about Abraxas. I can’t think of any other album I’d prefer to have been in the room to observe. Can you imagine? I could write about it for days and days.
I told Carlos that Caravanserai was a candidate for my favorite. He laughed and said ‘Clive Davis nicknamed it Career Suicide!’ Which I think is the wittiest and also most ignorant thing Clive ever said.
Primavera is an interesting moment in time. We clearly were out of step with the ‘duets with the stars’ theme of Supernatural, but there was something special about it. 1/2 time Latin funk grooves are some of my favorites.
