I learned a long time ago that life is happier without ego, simpler without struggling to control. If I make any situation about me instead of about other people, if I turn my attention to myself instead of what is before me, I make myself miserable. I love the poetry here, and watching the podcast will, I think, make me want to read David Bentley Hart's translation of the New Testament as well. Thank you for this post!
The Tao is basically saying, “stop trying to dominate everything,” which is terrible news for empire, capitalism, and anyone selling a 12-week optimization course.
Amazing how the sages keep saying “let go,” and civilization keeps replying, “Cool, but can we monetize that?”
Yes. Humanity has a remarkable ability to turn every spiritual insight into a subscription service. We just want to inspire folks out there to do their utmost to selflessly build communities and put these big principles into practice.
Sometimes the answer is in the letting go of doing, and just waiting. Sometimes the answer is in the letting go of grasping at hoped-for results and just doing for the sake of doing. Sometimes the answer is already here, requiring nothing to be done. Daoism from its beginnings is also practical and flexible, allowing for whatever is required in the moment and tends to avoid rigid dogmas. But even this is just a partial image.
One of the joys of this life is DBH in conversation with the folks he enjoys. I am a fan, like you Rainn, naysayers can just go to that eternal damnation place. Oh. Wait. Never mind.
Love and gratitude that in this weird way I can sit at the feet of incredible hearts and learn - and laugh.
Awesome. we love that we're all learning here together. Thanks for the great thought, and we'd love to hear if you get your husband to watch the episode ;)
Great conversation, Rainn! You and David have fantastic chemistry—I always love it when you two get together. Reading That All Shall Be Saved was my initial awakening, much like The Experience of God was yours. It’s a wonderful feeling when you comprehend a truth that enlivens the soul and nous.
Apokatastasis Baby! The ultimate restoration of ALL creation! This is the only path to “All shall be well”. Shalom.

I am a fan of DBH and love the Tao Te Ching. I’ll have to get this translation.

Not seeing enough people talk about how striking the thumbnail is. Thank you for this.
Thanks!
